2. High-Level Review

Begin by reviewing your overall system design. Look at it from a bird’s-eye perspective and ask the following questions:

  • Scalability: Is the system designed to handle a growing number of users and data?

  • Availability: How will the system handle downtime or failure of components?

  • Performance: Are the critical user-facing operations (e.g., fetching a news feed) optimized for speed and efficiency?

  • Security: Have you considered all necessary security measures to protect user data and communication?


3. Service Design Review

Dive deeper into each individual service (User, Post, Feed, Notification, etc.) and evaluate their interactions:

  • API Contracts: Reassess the API contracts between services.

    • Are the input/output formats well-defined and consistent across the board?

    • Are the APIs intuitive and do they meet the functional and non-functional requirements?

    • Can any APIs be optimized to reduce data transfer (e.g., minimize the size of JSON payloads)?

  • Service Boundaries: Are the service boundaries appropriate, or do they need refinement? For example:

    • If the Post Service is handling too many responsibilities (e.g., user interaction, post generation, analytics), consider breaking it into smaller services.

4. Database Optimization

Review and refine your database design:

  • Indexes and Queries:

5. Caching Strategy Review

  • Expiration Policies: Evaluate the cache expiration policy. Are certain items cached for too long or too short a period?

  • Data Freshness vs. Latency:

    • Balance the need for real-time data with caching. For example, user feeds can be slightly stale (e.g., cached for a few minutes) without impacting the user experience too much.

    • Consider lazy-loading or pagination to load data incrementally for better performance.

    Example:

    • Adjust the expiration time for cached user feeds to balance performance with real-time data needs. If users are unlikely to refresh frequently, you can cache the feed for a longer period (e.g., 10-15 minutes).


6. Scaling Strategy

Revisit your scaling plans:

  • Horizontal Scaling:

    • Review if your system is ready for horizontal scaling (adding more instances of services).

    • Ensure that services are stateless or are designed to store state externally (e.g., in Redis or a database) so they can be replicated across multiple servers easily.

  • Vertical Scaling:

    • If certain services need more resources (CPU/memory), can they be scaled vertically to handle the additional load?

    Example:

    • Confirm that the Post Service is stateless and can be easily scaled horizontally when user demand grows.


7. Fault Tolerance and Failure Handling

Reassess how your system handles failures:

  • Failure Scenarios:

    • What happens when one of your critical services fails (e.g., the User Service or Post Service)? Are there fallback mechanisms in place?

  • Retries and Circuit Breakers:

    • If your system encounters a failure, ensure that there are retry mechanisms in place for handling transient failures.

    • Implement circuit breaker patterns to avoid overwhelming a failing service with repeated requests.

  • Graceful Degradation:

    • Can your system degrade gracefully when components fail? For instance, if the Notification Service fails, users should still be able to use other parts of the application like the feed or posts.

    Example:

    • If the Notification Service goes down, the system should continue working without blocking the user’s ability to post or view the feed.


8. Load Testing and Performance Analysis

Begin planning load testing or reviewing early performance metrics:

  • Simulated Load: Consider using tools like JMeter or Apache Bench to simulate traffic and measure system performance under load.

  • Bottlenecks: Identify any bottlenecks that emerge under high load. For instance:

    • Are some database queries slow or causing significant delays?

    • Are any services unable to handle a high number of concurrent users?

  • Throughput & Latency: Measure the system’s throughput (requests per second) and latency (response time) to ensure it meets the defined non-functional requirements (e.g., <100ms response time for critical requests).

    • Simulate a large number of users fetching posts and determine how the Post and Feed Services handle the load.

    • Optimize the database queries or add caching if needed.


9. Security Review

Refine your security approach:

  • Authentication: Ensure that user sessions are securely managed and cannot be hijacked. Implement token expiration and refresh strategies for OAuth or JWT.

  • Authorization: Revisit the roles and permissions model to ensure users cannot access resources they shouldn’t.

  • Data Encryption: Double-check that sensitive data is properly encrypted both at rest and in transit.

  • Input Validation: Ensure that your APIs perform rigorous input validation to prevent SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), or other attacks.

    Example:

    • Ensure that all user-related operations are protected by authentication, and sensitive data such as passwords are hashed and stored securely.


10. Monitoring & Alerting Review

Ensure that the monitoring and alerting systems are properly configured:
